Simon Bernheim: CONNECTION 28

Exhibition Dates: 4 July – 1 August  2008
Preview with artist:  4 July 2008, 6 - 9 pm

Main gallery: André ten Broeke - <<Space Public>>
fa projects is pleased to present the first solo exhibition in London of the Dutch contextual and installation artist André ten Broeke.
Ten Broeke combines his practice of Contemporary Art with techniques derived from ancient crafts. His installations transform elements found onsite, giving a substance to his altered perception of reality.

<<Space Public>> is a one-off, site-specific installation. The artist will engage a dialogue with the gallery by using existing elements of the building’s history to reinterpret and reintroduce key components of its original function. Two large mirrors reflecting each other interact with the space individually. The project aims to create a complementary sructure to the building, using its history to activate a new way of perceiving the space.

André ten Broeke lives and works in Rotterdam. He has exhibited throughout the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. His latest site-specific installations have been shown at Mobile Institute, Brussels (2007) - Cinekid film festival, Amsterdam, (2006), OUDE KERK, Remi, Amsterdam, “The Mystery of new art”, Sandberg Institute, Amsterdam, 36th Poetry International, Rotterdam (2005) and Kunstvlaai5 Art Fair, Amsterdam (2004).

Project Space: Simon Bernheim – CONNECTION 28
Alongside ten Broeke’s exhibtion, the gallery will present, also for the first time in London, works by the young French artist Simon Bernheim.
Bernheim’s work constantly evolves around the perception of words, signs and language. His project is to change the meaning of words and language away from its sense and towards its form.

CONNECTION 28, is a network of steel chains connected to the wall by 28 nails, in the shape of a tree. The 28 links stand for a list of 28 words that Bernheim has invented over the past year. This process started with the cutting of letters in newspapers, randomly assembled to create new words with a maximum of ten letters each, regardless of meaning or legibility. A selection of 28 neologisms has been the focus of the work, introduced for their visual and phonetic effects and values. They are connected and linked to each other by various paths. These connections create a family of words that the artist manipulates constantly, like a genealogy tree. Each link in the chain contributes to an internal communication within this closed network.

In COSMICHEMICALIFEXTATI, the title appears all around the edges of a chrome wheel. The first letter of each word (“Cosmic”, “Chemical”, “Life”, “Extati”) is the last of the previous word. There again, this chain of words is perpetually moving within its own structure.

Simon Bernheim lives and works in Paris. He graduated from l’Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris in 2002 and has participated to group shows as well as exhibiting in solo shows in France and abroad. Since 2006, he has taken part in Wall paintings in South Corea, Venezuela, Japan and Nigeria. Simon Bernheim is represented by Galerie EvaHober, Paris.
